Epidemic and emerging disease alerts in the Pacific as of 06 June 2023

Influenza A & B and Influenza-Like-Illness (ILI):

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19):

Australia: Over the last week, 38,618 cases of COVID-19 were reported across Australia, an average of 5,517 cases per day. – Source: Department of Health, Australian Government accessed on 06 June 2023.

Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas (CNMI): As of 27 May 2023, a total of 13,934 COVID-19 cases and 43 deaths were reported by Commonwealth Healthcare Corporation of CNMI. The number of new COVID-19 cases decreased by 21% in week 21 compared to the previous 3 weeks. Cook Islands: As of 24 May 2023, a total of 7,120 COVID-19 cases and 2 deaths were reported by the Cook Islands Ministry of Health.– Source: COVID-19 - Cook Island Response accessed on 06 June 2023.

Federated States of Micronesia (FSM): As of 05 June 2023, a total of 26,459 COVID-19 cases and 65 deaths were reported by the FSM Department of Health and Social Affairs. – Source: FSM Department of Health and Social Affairs accessed on 06 June 2023.

French Polynesia: As of 28 May 2023, a total of 78,773 COVID-19 cases and 650 deaths were reported in French Polynesia. Ten new cases were reported in week 21. Guam: As of 05 June 2023, a total of 61,907 COVID-19 cases and 413 deaths were reported by the Guam Department of Public Health and Social Services (DPHSS). – Source: COVID-19 Surveillance Summary & Situation Report 05 June 2023.

Kiribati: As of 30 May 2023, a total of 5,037 COVID-19 confirmed community cases and 24 deaths were reported by the Kiribati Government. – Source: Personal communication with country officials on 01 June 2023.

New Zealand: As of 29 May 2023, a total of 2,375,191 COVID-19 cases and 2,942 deaths were reported by the New Zealand Ministry of Health. The 7-day rolling new case average is 1,982.– Source : New Zealand Ministry of Health accessed on 06 June 2023.

Niue: As of 04 June 2023, a total of 820 COVID-19 cases and no deaths were reported by the Niue Government.– Source: Niue Government accessed on 06 June2023.

Republic of Marshall Island (RMI): As of 30 May 2023, a total of 16,098 COVID-19 cases and 17 deaths were reported by the RMI Ministry of Health and Human Services. – Source: RMI COVID-19 Situation Report ministry of Health and Human Services (30 May 2023).

Solomon Islands: As of 21 May 2023, a total of 25,943 COVID-19 cases and 199 deaths were reported by the Ministry of Health & Medical Services. – Source: Personal communication with country officials on 24 May 2023.

Tokelau: As of 29 May 2023, Tokelau's largest atoll, Nukunonu, is now out of lockdown after experiencing its first community cases of COVID-19. In a statement, the government said Fakaofo Atoll has had two cases at the border and Nukunonu now has six positive community cases all within the same household. This includes the two new community cases who are children from the same family who have been isolating together. Tuvalu: As of 02 June 2023, the Pacific Syndromic Surveillance System detected a marked increase in influenza-like-illnesses (ILI) seen at the two clinics, starting since the 9th of April 2023. Meanwhile, confirmation of a positive SARS-CoV-2 (by rapid antigen test) was reported to Princess Margaret Hospital on Friday 26th May 2023. From the 26th May 2023 to 2nd June 2023, there were 132 positive cases recorded. Two cases have required admission to hospital. As a result, a red alert for COVID-19 is added. Wallis and Futuna: As of 31 May 2023, a total of 3,598 COVID-19 cases and 7 deaths have been reported by the Wallis and Futuna Health department. In Wallis, no new cases were reported since 26 May. Indicators showed low circulation of the virus. In Futuna, the number of new cases is still being reported however it is in decrease since 29 May.
